Introduction: A Message to Our Senior

But there’s good news—some of the biggest health threats, like colorectal cancer, can be prevented. As we grow older, it becomes even more important to pay attention to our bodies and take simple steps to protect ourselves. With early screenings and small lifestyle changes, you can stay strong and healthy for years to come. Let’s talk about how we can help you stay on top of your health by preventing one of the most preventable cancers—colorectal cancer. You deserve to feel your best, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Colorectal Cancer: A Preventable Cancer You Can Take Control Of

Colorectal cancer might sound scary, but it’s one of the easiest cancers to prevent. The key is getting screened regularly before any problems develop. These screenings can detect tiny growths, called polyps, that can turn into cancer if left unchecked. If your doctor finds any polyps during a colonoscopy, they can easily remove them before they have a chance to cause harm.

We want you to know that polyps aren’t cancer, and most haven’t started to turn into cancer yet. But by taking care of them early, we’re making sure they don’t grow into something more serious later on.

What Are Polyps, and Why Are They Important?

During your colonoscopy, your doctor will use a flexible device called a colonoscope to look at the walls of your colon and remove any polyps they find. Different types of polyps have different risks:

  • Hyperplastic Polyps: These are usually harmless and not precancerous. Still, your doctor will likely remove them to be on the safe side.

  • Adenomas: These are the polyps we pay the most attention to. While it can take many years for an adenoma to turn into cancer, and only about 5% ever do, we don’t want to take any chances. That’s why all adenomas are removed during your screening.

  • Sessile Serrated Polyps: These were once thought to be harmless, but we now know they can be risky. So, if any are found, they’ll be removed, too.

Follow-Up Care

Even after polyps are removed, it’s important to keep an eye on things. There’s a 25-30% chance that more polyps could show up later, which is why your doctor will schedule a follow-up colonoscopy. How soon you’ll need another depends on what’s found during the first one:

  • If you only have one or two small polyps, you may not need another exam for at least five years.

  • If larger or more numerous polyps are found, you’ll likely return for another colonoscopy in about three years.

  • If no polyps are found, and you’re at average risk for colon cancer, you might not need another screening for 10 years.

Other Screening Options: Cologuard

If a traditional colonoscopy sounds intimidating, there are other non-invasive screening options, like the Cologuard test. This test allows you to collect a stool sample at home, which is then tested for signs of cancer or precancerous conditions. Cologuard is a good option for those at average risk of colon cancer, but it’s important to talk with your doctor about whether this method is right for you. Unlike colonoscopies, Cologuard can’t remove polyps, but it can help detect if further tests are needed.

Making the Most of Your Exam

When it’s time for your colonoscopy, it’s important to be well-prepared. Following the prep instructions from your doctor ensures that they’ll get the best view of your colon. This often means eating a low-fiber diet for several days beforehand, as fiber can stick to the walls of the colon and make it harder for your doctor to see what’s going on.

By following these steps, you’re giving your doctor the best chance to find and remove any polyps before they have a chance to cause harm. Remember, this exam is an opportunity to take control of your health and protect yourself from colorectal cancer.

How You Can Lower Your Risk

After polyps are removed, there are simple lifestyle changes you can make to further reduce your risk of colon cancer. We recommend:

  • Eating Less Meat: Instead of red or processed meats, try incorporating more plant-based proteins and lean alternatives. Here are some great options:

    • Fish: Salmon, tuna, and mackerel are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and are heart-healthy alternatives.

    • Poultry: Chicken or turkey can provide lean protein without the risks associated with red meat.

    • Plant-Based Proteins: Beans, lentils, chickpeas, and tofu are excellent sources of protein and fiber. They not only support colon health but are also easy to add to soups, salads, or stir-fries.

  • Calcium-Rich Foods: A diet rich in calcium may also help lower your risk of colon cancer. Here are some great sources of calcium:

    • Dairy: Milk, yogurt, and cheese are all high in calcium and easy to include in your meals.

    • Leafy Greens: Vegetables like kale, spinach, and collard greens are packed with calcium, plus other important nutrients.

    • Fortified Foods: Many plant-based milk options, like almond, soy, or oat milk, are fortified with calcium. You can also find calcium-fortified cereals and orange juice.

    • Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, chia seeds, and sesame seeds are not only rich in healthy fats but also provide a good amount of calcium.

By making these adjustments to your diet, you can enjoy delicious and nutritious meals while supporting your long-term health.
